Toric Lenses

Toric lenses are designed to be ‘heavier’ in the bottom part so that it would not move around. This is more stable. These lenses are usually bi- focal, composed of one lens for astigmatism correction and the other is for myopia or hyperopia.
Rigid gas permeable contact lenses were initially used to correct the vision. RGPs provide a slight difference in the crispiness of vision and are able to retain the shape of the lenses. With recent developments, there are now soft lenses for such use. These combine the comfort of soft contact lenses and the powerful lenses for astigmatism and for myopia or hyperopia. Further developments have also given birth to disposable contact lenses.
There are two leading brands used for astigmatism – the vertex toric and the biomedics 55. The vertex toric is manufactured by Cooper Vision. This type of contact lenses is made using UltraSync® technology. This is used to create a comfortable edge for the contact lenses. There is also a blue tint in it for easy insertion and removal. This is composed of 45 per cent methafilcon A and 55 per cent water. Another one is the biomedics 55. The older version is a spherical lens, while the newer one has an aspheric lens with edges which are rounded. Aspheric lenses also correct spherical aberration in the eye. This is can also be used for extended and daily wear. Although, there are also toric lenses made of silicon hydrogel.
Fitting toric lenses for astigmatism can be very crucial. Not all eye practitioners are comfortable with fitting these types of lenses. At the same time, these practitioners can have a slightly higher fee and so does the lenses.
Toric lenses can come as colored lenses. And by colored lenses, it means that the ones that ca enhance or completely change your eye color. As mentioned before, it can also be disposable or frequent replacement contact lenses. However, the prescription (and preferred color) determines if you can have daily, weekly or monthly disposables or frequent replacement.
