Fluid Retention - An underlying physiological problem

Approximately 60% of our body is made up of water. From the minute cells to the vital organs and skeletal structure, our body’s proper functioning depends on water balance. The regulatory mechanisms of our body, such as the heart and kidneys, are responsible for keeping the amount of fluid in the body at a constant level. Therefore, when dehydration and fluid retention occurs they may indicate an underlying physiological problem.

Swelling is the body’s immediate response to any injury—whether it’s an ankle sprain or a burn, or the lack of mobility, even the bloated legs and ankles during pregnancy or before the monthly period, it may have a number of causes. But once the minor swelling is not treated it will lead to further fluid accumulation which may compromise function of the joints and other parts of the body. Therefore as soon as you notice some swelling in one part or another, here are a few tips that will help you bring down fluid retention.

Keep moving

The lack of exercise is a common cause for swelling, especially in the legs. Avoid sitting for long periods at work or even inside the plane. Get up, stretch your extremities and walk around for a few paces every now and then. For those people who have a limited mobility, try flexing the knees and ankles, and wiggling the toes if possible. Using your muscles will help prevent pooling of blood and interstitial fluid. Likewise, minimize crossing your legs as this can restrict the blood flow and aggravate swelling.

Raise it

Raising the extremity above the heart means allowing the fluid to drain down by means of gravity. This is as beneficial as moving the extremity as well.

Get some leg support

Occupations that require standing and sitting for long hours are most likely to develop leg swelling and varicose veins due to the increased pressure of the fluid inside leg blood vessels and capillaries. Prescription support stockings (i.e. anti-embolic stockings) are available with various degrees of compression. There are also over-the-counter support hose as well. But be careful about excessively constricting hose as you’ll end up doing more harm than good.

Watch out for sodium

Where sodium goes, water follows. This principle of human anatomy and physiology tells us that increased sodium intake causes the body to retain fluid. So cut down sodium in the diet, avoid junk food, and minimize dairy products, root crops, and canned goods. Consult your dietician about the parameters of a low sodium diet.

The proper weight

Overweight and obese people have a greater chance of acquiring almost all diseases, so as edema.

Improve your circulation

Both exercise and a massage can help improve your body’s circulation. For a localized minor swelling, try massaging the site gently.

You and your medication

Some drugs like birth control pills can cause also water retention.

Avoid tight garments

Tight jeans and constricting clothing can result into applying pressure on the extremities and restrict blood flow.
But if the swelling affects the whole body, or is a minor swelling that does not subside within a few days, or you suspect deeper injuries, always consult your Doctor.

Epistaxis: Ways to Keeping Nose Bleeding At Bay

Our nasal passages are very delicate. Because it is highly vascular, any trauma to the nose can cause blood draining out from the nostrils. Although nosebleeds are rarely fatal, oozing blood can be very inconvenient for a person, and could sometimes bring about undesirable consequences.

Causes

Nosebleeds can look very alarming, especially if it is a severe hemorrhage. This typically occurs as a result of local injury such as a blow to the nose, a picky finger, very dry air, and nasal irritation that could cause perforation of the mucosal lining, exposing the blood vessels underneath eventually causing its rupture. But in some cases, epistaxis, the medical term for nosebleeding, may be due to underlying medical conditions such as vitamin K deficiency, clotting disorders, tumors, or the intake of anticoagulants and illicit drugs.

The bleeding may originate either in the anterior (front) or posterior (back) portion of the nasal cavity. Most nosebleeds are located anteriorly that comes from tiny capillaries, accounting for about 90% of the cases. They are much milder compared to those stemming from the back of the nose where there is already an involvement of arterial blood vessels. Because posterior bleeding comes from an artery, it is generally profuse and difficult to control.

Management

Most nosebleeds arise secondary to trauma; however, it is still important to check with your physician as he can rule out any other possibilities especially if this has become frequent with no identifiable cause. In the meantime, here are ways you can do to beat the bleeding:

Apply pressure

Bleeding from the nose can be stopped simply by applying pressure on the area. Sit up, so that the head is above the heart, and less blood will flow to the nose. Lean and slightly bend your head forward while pinching the nose. This will prevent blood from draining into the throat which can cause you to choke or spit out blood. Remember to keep the mouth open so that you can breathe properly.

In cases of severe bleeding, gauze may also be used to pack the nose. Gauze is more preferred than cotton as particles from cotton may pose a risk when inhaled. The bleeding should cease within half an hour, if not, proceed immediately to the emergency room.

Application of cold

Ice pack may be very helpful during nosebleeding. Studies have shown that the application of ice compress on the forehead or the bridge of the nose will help in constricting blood vessels, thereby minimizing blood flow and stopping the bleeding. A common practice is to suck ice chips or ice cubes which is also said to perform the same mechanism.

Adequate humidification

If humidity is identified to be the cause of nosebleed, the condition may be alleviated by installing a humidifier. Another method of moisturizing the nose is applying petroleum jelly or any water-based lubricant in the front portion of the nostrils. Saline sprays are also helpful. The Over-the -counter nasal decongestants may also be sprayed inside the nostrils to constrict the blood vessels and reduce the blood flow to the nose.

Refrain from using illicit drugs and blood thinners

Unless prescribed for a certain medical condition, never take anticoagulants without a prescription. Blood thinners like aspirin can prolong clotting time and aggravate bleeding.

Illicit drugs that can be snorted such as cocaine are highly associated with nosebleeding and perforation. Smoking can also dry out the nasal passages which increases your risk for nose bleeds.

Leave your nose alone

To prevent epistaxis, resist the temptation of forceful blowing of the nose, nose picking, and straining. If this cannot be prevented, the least you can do is to try doing it gently.

Have it seen by a doctor

The management of epistaxis will depend highly on where the bleed occurs. The physician will try to visualize the nasal passages to detect the area of origin.
Anterior bleeding can be treated with the administration of topical vasoconstrictors. But profuse bleeding from the posterior regions, there might be a need for nasal packing. A nasal catheter that is attached to a gauze soaked with petroleum jelly will be inserted. The catheter shall be removed while the vaselinized gauze is allowed to stay in place for 48 hours to a few days. Depending on the physician’s preference, a balloon-inflated catheter may be used as a substitute. People who have recurring nosebleeds may need to increase their iron intake or be prescribed with iron supplements because of the risk of developing anemia.

Understanding Infectious Diseases

Virtually almost any place on the face of the planet is thriving with various microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasites, and fungal spores that can be transmitted to humans and cause a wide array of diseases. Even inside our very own bodies; our intestines also contain billions of “helpful” bacteria that aids in the digestive processes. However, despite their usefulness, they may also be capable of doing otherwise--when the balance between these microbes and our bodies is disturbed.

Human illnesses can be caused by various microorganisms and their by-products. And because they are found everywhere, it is not impossible that we may harbor them at any point in our lifetime and result into minor nuisances like common cold to fatal diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

Disease Transmission

Microbes can be transmitted through many ways. In between humans, they can be passed on directly by skin contact, sneezing, coughing, blood to blood transmission, or sexual activity. In some diseases, an infected pregnant woman can also pass the microbes to the fetus in her womb. They can also be transmitted indirectly when an infected person comes in contact with an environmental surface and contaminating them, and then others may acquire the microbes by touching the surface or ingest a contaminated substance. Some microbes can be spread into the body through a vector or carrier, usually an insect, or an infected animal.

Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases

From time to time, new infectious diseases turn up and raise public concern. Some of these include HIV infection, Legionnaire’s disease, Anthrax, Severe Acquired Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Ebola virus, and Lyme disease have even provided real-life scares.

Emerging diseases arise from genetic changes or evolution of an existing organism creating a new strain that spreads suddenly in new geographic areas or populations. At least 30 new strains have been identified over the past two decades and threaten to increase in the future. Similarly, re-emerging infectious diseases are illnesses brought about by microorganisms that have been previously identified and controlled but are now resistant to common antimicrobial drugs such as in the case of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis.

For this reason, there is a large possibility that in the future, such infectious diseases may pose greater problems. Firstly, because of the simple genetic makeup, microbes can mutate easily into deadly resistant strains. To add to that, large numbers of the world population are misusing and self-medicating with antibiotics to treat infections which causes them to lose their ability to combat common infections. A good example for this is the bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) which is found to have developed resistance to antibiotics like penicillins and cephalosporins.

Poverty, overpopulation, overcrowding, population shifts, and improper sanitation among certain areas have also largely contributed to the rapidly propagate. The globalization of world commerce may also mean that contaminated foods, plants, and other products cross various international borders daily. Changes in human habits too, have expedited the spread of infectious agents, particularly in terms of eating habits, lifestyle, sexual activity, and increased substance abuse.
What You Can Do

Simple principles of food and water sanitation, safe sex, hygiene, appropriate use of antibiotics, immunization, and regular visits to the physician could help prevent millions of deaths from ailments caused by infectious diseases every year. Here are a few, simple, common sense practices that can help:

1.As much as possible avoid self-medicating with antibiotics. Overuse or improper use of antibacterial agents will only increase bacterial resistance to the drug, so that the next time you will encounter the same microorganism, it will be more resistant to that drug. This means that the drug has little or no effect on the microbes, and there will be a need to use a higher and stronger dose of medication. Drug-resistant strains can be easily transmitted to susceptible persons and treatment can be very complicated. Hence, to prevent such, use antibiotics exactly as prescribed by your physician, and make sure to finish the entire prescription.

2.Avoid unsafe and unprotected sex, and refrain from intravenous drug use.

3.Observe cleanliness in handling, storage, and cooking food products to guard against food-borne illnesses. Wash hands often with warm water and soap. And ensure cleanliness around the area where you prepare food.

4.When travelling, learn about disease threats around the area you are visiting. Consult your physician for prophylactic medication or immunization.

5.Children must be immunized against a particular disease.

6.Be cautious with unfamiliar and wild animals.

7.When sick, give yourself some time to recover. Avoid coughing or sneezing on others.

How to Manage Hiccups

When we get hiccups, they are nothing but a nuisance to us. They just seem to appear out of nowhere for no apparent reason. Luckily, most of them resolve by itself within minutes. However, in a minority of the cases, they can last for several hours, weeks, or even years! The longest recorded attack of hiccups had a duration of 68 years. This was even documented in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Causes of Hiccups

A hiccup occurs when the diaphragm, a muscle that helps us breathe which also divides the chest and abdomen, suddenly contracts, and the epiglottis, a flap above the vocal chords closes. Air is sucked in as the diaphragm contracts now causing the characteristic “hic” sound that abruptly stops.

Although the exact cause is not yet fully understood, the occurrence of hiccups can be traced to the phrenic nerve, the nerve controlling the diaphragm, and related structures such as the vagus nerve. Many experts believe that one of these two nerves may be irritated, particularly the vagus nerve. This in turn affects the phrenic nerve which leads to the diaphragm, causing involuntary spasms. The contractions may be triggered by eating too fast, excessive alcohol consumption, carbonated beverages, spicy foods, smoking, and stress. Certain drugs and certain medical conditions like Tourette syndrome are also thought to set off hiccups.

Ten Techniques to Try

We have heard of home remedies to ward off the “hic” cough. Here are the top 10 tried-and-true techniques:

• Hold your breath as long as possible. This is thought to work based on the principle that once the body experiences an overwhelming sensation, such as the lack of oxygen from holding one’s breath, the brain shuts off the hiccup response to attend to the more important stimulus.

• Hold a paper bag tightly over the mouth and nose, and breathe in and out rapidly for several times. Be sure to use paper, not plastic bag. This increases the levels of carbon dioxide in the body, making it more concerned with getting rid of the excess CO2 than causing hiccups.

• Drink water as this will interrupt the hic cycle. The epiglottis will be “forced” to shut close to give way for water to pass through the esophagus instead of going to the wind pipe. Gargling may also have the same effect.

• Apply cold into one side of the Adam’s apple. The cold is said to block the nerve signals that causes the hiccups. But be careful not to place it near the carotid artery as this may affect blood pressure.

• Sir down and lean forward. Pull up the knees to compress the chest for a few minutes.
• Have someone scare you--for real.

• Drink water from the far rim of the glass.

• Many say that a teaspoonful of sugar could help get rid of the hiccups. This is said to make the vagus nerve more concerned with the sweet sensation rather than making the hiccups impulses. In an 1971 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, sugar may also be placed under the tongue.

• Eat slowly. In some way, eating too fast can irritate the vagus nerve causing hiccups. Do the same for alcohol. Drink in moderation as alcohol may also irritate the stomach and subsequently, the vagus nerve nearby.

• Avoid spicy meals. Spicy foods too may irritate the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. They can also cause acid from the stomach to leak into the food pipe which can bring on hiccups.

When You Can’t Stop the Spell

Most of the time, patience is the key to stopping the hiccups. In fact, they simply resolve by itself in a matter of minutes. Hiccups can occur at with an average of three to five times annually for each person. However, if the hiccups become chronic, or disturb eating, sleep, or work, it’s time to visit the doctor. Note the activities you just did prior to experiencing the hiccups. In some scenarios, hiccups may be caused by other reasons. Report immediately to your physician if you have noticed a bout of hiccups after taking medications. Persistent hiccups may also be due to underlying medical disorders such as infection, cancer, nervous system disorders, and problems of the renal system or digestive tract.

In rare cases, there might be a need to take antispasmodics, antacids, or sedatives to help calm the digestive system. In severe, persistent cases, surgery may be performed to cut the nerve that is triggering the hiccups.

How Personality can Affect Heart Health

These recent years have ushered in a sharp rise in the incidence of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and other life-threatening emergencies stemming from heart problems. Are these really caused by the greater intake of greasy fast food, as proposed by some health buffs, or are there other forces at work that can cause strain to the heart? Experts believe that stress has a tremendous part to play in affecting one’s cardiovascular health. However, some people also undergo stress without succumbing to heart problems. What constitutes the difference, then? What makes one person more susceptible to heart disease while another remains protected?

Studies show that there are several causes of heart problems that are intangible but can be deadlier than a daily trip to the fast food joint:

1.Stress – A study showed proof of this when some pigs were fed high-fat, high-cholesterol diets for a given time period. Then, one group was exposed to a vicious dog pawing at them just outside their pen, while the control group was left alone. The results revealed that the pigs with the stress factor added had more members in their group who suffered from heart attacks, while those in the control group remained well.

2.Perennial anxiety – The kind of stress that hurts the most is not the one that comes once in a while. The pigs that died did not have a heart attack simply by one bark from the dog; the dog’s continued harassing presence resulted in a form of continued anxiety, one that is quite common among human beings. Doctors believe that this day-to-day never-leaving anxiety is what increases the risk of heart attacks the most.

3.Personality – While this is usually innate to a person, the kind of personality one has also plays a part in determining the risk that he has for acquiring heart disease. Type-A strong-willed, obsessive-compulsive personalities are considered to be at greater risk than type-B happy-go-lucky individuals, simply because of the overall effect of always being worried and pressured taking its toll on the heart.

Considering how stress and anxiety are pretty much straightforward, personality may come across as the biggest shock to most people. Is personality really an important player in determining a person’s risk for heart disease? If so, what does one do because it is not something that can be changed overnight?

An anecdote tells the story of a doctor who has the couches in his clinic repaired by the upholsterer. The upholsterer points out that only the front parts of the couch seats look worn, while the back and the inner part of the seat still look brand new. When he brings this query to the physician, it turns out that the doctor is a heart specialist, and most of his patients sit on the edge of their seats while waiting their turn. This speaks of a type-A personality, of persons who always seem to be in a hurry and who always wants perfection in everything.

Another study indicates that the cars in the parking lot of a hospital are mostly parked rear-end-first on a particular time of the day, compared to other times when it is a healthy mix of rear-end and front-end parking. An interview with the receptionist then reveals that that time when nearly all were parked rear first was the schedule for the heart patients’ checkups! Again, this is an indication that people who want to zoom out of the hospital at first chance have a greater propensity to suffer from heart disease.

Although personality is something that usually cannot be changed, at least not in a hurry, sometimes it may still be possible for type-A personality people to loosen up a bit. It cannot be forced, though, but comes as a result of an inward self-confidence that even if things are not as perfect as he wants it to be, it is still all right. The usual cause of this uptightness is the belief that one has to fight by himself to survive, and that nobody else is looking after his good. Perhaps the freedom will come one he realizes that he is not alone in this world, and that he can let go and relax. When that happens, even something as ingrained as personality can be slightly improved, thus decreasing the chances of that person suffering from deadly heart disease.

Arthritis Natural Remedies

Each day in the morning after dropping the same in the bowlful of water the previous night so that the natural ingredients available inside it thoroughly mixes away and reaches straight to the infected internal region of the patient’s body. The garlic consists of an anti-inflammatory factor to protect the joints and bones of the body with other properties to cure the gouty, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis of the human body joints. Usually home remedies are far more effective to the patient as they all are easily accessible at home with limited means in-hand. The skin of the potato shouldn’t be peeled off and medium-sized slices should be introduced in a large glassful of chilled water.

The glass of water then is drunk with an empty stomach only otherwise its natural properties will be wasted in lurch. Carrots, celery and green leafy vegetable juice subsides the arthritis acute pain and joints becomes flexible to move freely where previously they remain stiff and unmoved with increase in sugar molecules in the bloodstream causing signs of diabetes to the patient’ body. A warm glass of water mixed with a pint of honey and a dash of lemon juice thoroughly peeled and meshed in it is effective due to the citrus acid present in the lemon to make muscles strong which in turn makes the joints and bones strong enough to withstand the unhygienic factors of the atmosphere. Natural herbalists’ therapy suggests the cupful of tea made up of ginger everyday early in the morning for relief of the joint pains. A special tea too is drink along by certain known people of the world who suffer from arthritis problems who knows about and even informed to take a cupful of papaya seed for relaxation to the joints and providing flexibility to the muscles and bones.

Castor oil extracted straight away from the stems and roots of the trunk of the tree is extremely beneficial which a patient can drink before going for sleep as the oil doesn’t only provide any sleep apnea or frequent urination but if taken at a stretch for a prolonged period helps the sufferer from the flexibility at the muscle region and no inflammation is caused due to it. Regular exercising and yoga attempts to the patient’s body is mandatory performed early in the morning wee hours to prevent the patient to jump, run, skip with a skipping rope, do ‘asans’ over the soft mattresses etc. The food as recommended by herbalists for natural treatment for arthritis shouldn’t involve hydro generated oils in particular because they have the tendency to inflammation as whenever they want to do so. Junk foods should also be neglected by the arthritis patients because they tend to overheat the body organs and causes tendon to the muscles of the body.

The fat is easily deposited at the joints and bones of the delicate muscles and if they do not move comfortably they ache. Guggulu, saunth, shallaki, mukundh, guduchi are effective herbs and shrubs as a natural cure and care for inflammation of the joints due to arthritis. At least 5 grams of ashwagandha powder along with Luke warm water as a natural substance works wonders for the joints and bones. Shilajit is easily accessible at the herbalist shop in the domestic market and is very tasty too which consists of the properties to stop the excessive inflammation of the joints and make them flexible by nature. Anemia, constipation, colitis, stiffness in the bones and joints causing arthritis symptoms of inappropriate postural habits, irregular diet chart regime, less use of joints at the workplace and hereditary factors all combine to constitute the cause of arthritis in the human body.

Different Types of Dyslexia

The name dyslexia was introduced by a German ophthalmologist R. Berlin in 1884. He invented it out of two Greek words which are dys, which means difficult or sick and lexis, which means word. He used this name to illustrate a specific disability of reading in the lack of pathological situation in the optical organs.

As research developed, doctors and psychologists could distinguish and describe many types of dyslexia. Way back in history, people referred to these disabilities as number blindness, motor function blindness, writing blindness and hearing blindness. At present, no one speaks about those terminologies and even if you cite those types of dyslexia to people, they don’t even know what you are discussing about. Let’s examine each one and use the names that are more vivid and appropriate for each type.

Dyscalculia is one of the least known among the dyslexia types. As you could see, you may have a hint on what the disability it refers to. This type of dyslexia refers to the struggle in grasping simple math concepts and simple math computations. It even includes the struggle to tell time and spatial analysis. But put into mind that people with dyslexia are not stupid, for those who have dyscalculia are not stupid either, they just happen to have a disorder that initiated in the brain that gives them a hard time in learning such things.

Dyspraxia on the other hand, is a disorder for people who may be considered as awkward or ungainly in their past experiences. This kind of dyslexia is a dilemma with motor skills and may contain lack of organization of speech, insights, and language.

Dysgraphia and dyspraxia has something in common, they are referred to as problems regarding motor skills that are essential for writing clearly. Apparently, this can have consequences for all of the child’s activities in school and even throughout his childhood if neglected. There are several ways to treat dysgraphia problems.

Phonological dyslexia or well-known as Auditory dyslexia, is a disability of a person having difficulties in transforming sounds into words. These may include problems repeating instructions and sentences that are read to following pointed verbal instructions.

Visual dyslexia, another less popular type of dyslexia, is about the struggle of converting information and instructions taken in by the eyes. The data that is taken and processed to the visual center of the brain is shuffled or deficient. This could reflect on the difficulties in reading or writing.

These types of dyslexia, which are specific, are generalized by terms such as trauma dyslexia, or primary and secondary dyslexia. These are valid terms that doctors and psychologists use. They give more descriptions of the reasons for the disorders. Examinations are continuing and the latest information about dyslexia is being educated to people. The primary key to learning more about the different types of dyslexia is to refer to as many individuals you can who are knowledgeable in this field.

What are Learning Disabilities?

Being diagnosed with a learning disability can be scary at first, but it’s important to remember that such disabilities have nothing to do with one’s intellectual capacity. In fact, famous personalities such as Walt Disney, Alexander Graham Bell, and Winston Churchill all had learning disabilities, and look how well they did.

Learning disabilities: The Basics

A learning disability is defined as a problem that affects the brain’s ability to accept, process, analyze, or accumulate information. These problems may seem small, but they can make it very difficult to learn as quickly as students without learning disabilities. There are many types of learning disabilities, and many affected students have more than one kind. Some make it hard for the student to focus, causing the mind to wander, and other disabilities make it difficult to write, read, spell, or solve math problems.

The way in which the brain processes information is quite complicated, which is why it’s no wonder that we often change our minds. For example, when you simply look at a photo, the brain doesn’t just look at the picture but also forms the lines into an image, relates the photo to stored memories, and then stores the photo for future memory. Similarly, as we listen to someone speaking, we have to distinguish the words, interpret their meaning, and understand the connotations of what is being said. These activities involve different parts of the brain, and it’s up to our minds to connect all the complex components.

Learning disabilities are sometimes hard to detect, and they’re rarely apparent when you’re simply interacting with a person. They exhibit themselves only when a person is writing, reading, speaking, figuring out problems, or trying to focus. In most cases, the disability is diagnosed in school when a teacher notices that the student has trouble following directions or has a hard time doing work that should be easy. Other individuals, meanwhile, develop complicated ways of hiding their learning disabilities, and their problems are sometimes not detected until many years on.
Types of Learning Disabilities

There are two major categories of learning disabilities—verbal and nonverbal:

* Verbal learning disabilities: When a person has difficulty with both written and spoken words, he or she may have a verbal learning disability. The most common is dyslexia, which causes people to have difficulty recognizing letters and relating them to sounds. Because of this, people with dyslexia often have problems with reading- and writing-related tasks. Many people with verbal learning disabilities can read or write, but they have trouble in some aspects of language use.

* Nonverbal learning disabilities: When a person has trouble processing visual things, he or she may have a nonverbal learning disability. One may have difficulty making sense of optical details such as numbers or letters written on a blackboard—for example, he or she may confuse a plus sign with a multiplication sign. This type of disability may also lead to difficulty mastering abstract concepts such as fractions.

Can ADHD Be a Good Thing?

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, you may feel like the world has something against you. After all, the word “disorder” is right there in the name, and disorders tend to be bad things. However, if you ask the average person with ADHD, they’re liable to tell you that there are just as many benefits as drawbacks. In fact, if you view the drawbacks as nothing more than minor inconveniences, then you can actually think of ADHD as a great thing.

Modern mental health practices have come a long way and do great things for people, but there’s definitely something a little misguided about putting negative labels on so-called “disorders” that are really just unconventional personality traits. The world would be boring if everyone’s minds worked the same way, and we should in fact consider ourselves lucky to live in a world with such diversity.

If ADHD is a “disorder,” then the ideal mind is like this: Slow and deliberate in its thinking, able to focus and concentrate on things at length, and capable of multitasking. If you look at the opposite of this—that is, a mind that can’t think deliberately, can’t focus, and can’t multitask—and call it ADHD, then there’s no doubt that it is a disorder. But ADHD can just as easily be cast in a more positive light. For example, what if you had a mind that was capable of thinking quickly, grasping broad concepts without getting bogged down in details, and was enthusiastic about a broad variety of topics? This wouldn’t be so bad.

Whichever type of mind you would prefer to have, there’s no denying that there are attributes of the ADHD mind that can be regarded as positive. In addition to those qualities I just mentioned, people with ADHD also tend to be able to think outside of the box. They are passionate and creative, and they tend to have a lot of energy. And here’s the thing about the issue of focus: When an ADHD person works on something that he or she is truly interested in, their level of focus will be unmatched. They just have trouble focusing on things they don’t care about—and really, who can blame them for that?

Fortunately, these ideas are beginning to catch on, and there have been numerous books and scientific studies that actually find much to praise about ADHD. The condition is likely to be saddled with its unfortunate name for a long time, but the reality is that the ADHD mind is just different, and it’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
